Photos from our DMZ Tour with the USO.

The tour was great, if exhausting. We started at noon and got back to Seoul around 7 p.m., and even though you’re not walking all that much throughout the day I could not keep my eyes open on the bus ride home.

The tour had all kinds of stuff that I hadn’t seen on my first tour. We got to climb down through a secret infiltration tunnel that North Korea dug in the 1970s. We visited Dorasan Station, the last station in South Korea that was built with the hope that sometime in the future people will be able to travel past the border. And, of course, we visited Panmunjeom, the area with the blue buildings up above where you can actually see North Korea and take a few steps across the border while inside one of the buildings.

This tour was another highlight of my mom’s trip to Korea, I highly recommend that you do a DMZ tour (whether with the USO or another guide company) if you get the chance.

Busan with Mom.

We only had two full days, but we made the most of it, and were totally exhausted by the time we got back to Cheonan.

The highlights:

  • Walking around the Gamcheon Art Village in the afternoon sunshine.
  • Taking in the views at Busan Yonggungsa Temple on the coast.
  • Making my mom try live octopus…she tried a bite, but I ended up eating 95 percent of the plate, hahaha.
  • Baring everything at Spa Land. Mom definitely freaked out on the way in, but this ended up being one of her favorite parts of her trip. I really recommend Spa Land for short trips or taking people who have never been to a public bath before, since it’s so nice and they’re used to foreigners. We made sure to get a full body scrub, sloughing off a whole layer of skin. Again, something mom was terrified to try but loved doing afterward.
  • Yogurt patbingsu and my favorite hole in the wall Chinese food off of Gwangali Beach.
  • Sitting on the beach and chatting through the sunset.

Busan, 보고 싶어요!

So Purple Bar in Gwangju, South Korea.

Went down to Gwangju just for a night last weekend to say goodbye to a friend who went home early. But no worries, we’ll see each other in DC all the time right? <3

Gamcheon Art and Culture Village, Busan.

Historically a refuge for refugees during the Korean War, the city has recently decided to revitalize this cluster of houses and improve the quality of life of its residents. A must-see in Busan!
